A Case Study on the Implementation of Small-Group Instruction in College Writing Courses

초록

This study analyzes the implementation and significance of a small-group college writing class conducted at S University, a private institution in a non-capital area of South Korea. The pilot program, launched in the first semester of 2024, reorganized conventional writing classes into smaller sections of 12 to 16 students. This study, tailored to the small-group class operation model, proposed the completion of an academic writing piece as a course objective. It explored the potential for qualitative improvement in the course through measures such as limiting course content, strengthening instructor feedback, and revising the weekly class structure. Findings indicate that the new format contributed positively to the effectiveness of instructor feedback and student–instructor interaction. However, limitations emerged in student concentration and learning outcomes, depending on individual learner differences. This study outlines both the practical constraints and pedagogical possibilities of small-group instruction, offering a foundational reference for future developments in college writing education.
