Combining the triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have emerged as a promising technology for energy harvesting. Since their inception, TENGs have garnered significant attention due to their high efficiency and sustainability in converting ambient mechanical energy into electrical power. Over the past decades, numerous research groups have demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) materials, such as graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes and MXenes, hold great potential to significantly enhance the performance of TENGs. When used as electrodes or triboelectric materials, these 2D materials not only improve the design of TENGs but also contribute to further performance enhancements. This review outlines the main components and key factors driving the advancement of TENGs, focusing on how these 2D materials can be integrated into critical components to improve TENG performance. Additionally, successful and representative examples of TENG applications are provided.
