Factors affecting the life satisfaction of marriage immigrants and the mediating effect of social relationships

This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the life satisfaction of marriage immigrants, explore the impact of family functioning on their life satisfaction, examine whether social relationships, specifically social participation and social networks, mediate the relationship between family functioning and life satisfaction, and provide theoretical and policy implications based on the findings. To achieve these objectives, survey data from 3731 marriage immigrants residing across South Korea were analyzed. The results can be summarized as follows: Firstly, several factors emerged as significant determinants of life satisfaction among marriage immigrants, including age, marital period, household income, conversation time with spouse, relationship with family, cultural differences, quarrels with spouse, relationship with children, difficulties in living in Korea, health status, degree of depression experience, and social status. Secondly, the analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between marriage immigrants' family functioning and their life satisfaction, indicating that those with better family relationships tend to experience higher life satisfaction. Lastly, this study identified the mediating role of the social network variable in the relationship between marriage immigrants' family functioning and their life satisfaction. This finding suggests that among marriage immigrants with positive family relationships, those who have larger social networks tend to exhibit higher life satisfaction compared to those with smaller networks. Overall, these findings contribute to our understanding of the factors influencing the life satisfaction of marriage immigrants and emphasize the importance of family functioning and social networks in shaping their subjective well-being. The implications of these findings can inform theoretical developments and guide policies aimed at promoting the life satisfaction and overall well-being of marriage immigrants.
